U.S. 6 Improvements: Bureau & LaSalle Counties

Welcome to the project website for the proposed improvements to the U.S. 6 Frontage Road in Bureau County and Old U.S. 6 in La Salle County. The Illinois Department of Transportation is in the preliminary and early phase of a study to improve a portion of both of these roads.

Please explore this page for further information regarding the improvements. There are additional crash exhibits, photos and preliminary typical sections that are available.

These projects consist of roadway closures and intermittent reconstruction for both locations. Approximately one half mile of the U.S. 6 Frontage Road from 1600 E Road to 1800 E Street in Bureau county will be subject to reconstruction. In La Salle County, approximately 0.18 mile of Old U.S. 6 from N 29th Road to 0.8 mile east of U.S. 6 will be subject to reconstruction.

Several portions of U.S. 6 Frontage Road in Bureau county will be permanently closed while still providing access to U.S. 34 for the various properties throughout the project limits. A portion of Old U.S. 6 in La Salle County will be permanently closed while still providing access to U.S. 6 for the various properties throughout the project limits.

The improvements are tentatively scheduled in the department’s FY 2025-2030 Highway Improvement Program, subject to project readiness and funding availability. A circular roadway, under the jurisdiction of IDOT, located approximately 0.30 mile east of 1800 E Street on U.S. 34 will be subject to resurfacing.

Note: IDOT projects typically have three distinct phases. Phase I (or the project study) consists of developing the project scope, environmental studies, and preliminary design of a project. Phase II (design) consists of refining the design to develop contract plans and land acquisition. Phase III (construction) consists of the actual construction of the project.
